The candles are traditionally lit by the woman of the house. After she recites
the blessing; an additional informal prayer is also addressed to the Creator. It
is an intimate supplication for the spiritual and physical health of the family.
As to the number of candles that are lit there are at least two, representing the
commandments to “Remember the Sabbath” (Ex. 20:8), and to “observe the
Sabbath” (Deut. 5:12). Some kindle seven candles representing the seven days
of creation or the seven lights of the menorah in the Temple. Others kindle ten
candles in commemoration of the Ten Commandments. In most homes, one candle is lit for each member of the family.
Michael Kupietzky, in his work entitled “The Stone Family Candelabra”,
achieves both an aesthetic and functional work of art. A contemporary material
accompanied by a traditional motif lends the piece a delicate and feminine look.
Adorning the base are the Hebrew words “Shabbat Shalom”. A window revealing
the stone allows for a family name to be engraved transforming the piece into a
family heirloom. Bridging the base with the stone stem is a traditional Fleur de
Lis motif. A silver ring with a geometric design allows the branches of the arms to
unite. The candle holders are made of silver nesting a stone body. The stone can
be engraved with each name of the member of the family. The design allowing
the candelabra to "grow with the family" (up to 12 branches may be added).
Each work is signed and numbered by the artist and is available in a limited edition.
